PETALING JAYA: Some 25 days after receiving a new heart and set
of lungs simultaneously, Malaysia's first double transplant patient
Siti Salmah Jasni died Tuesday morning. She was 18.
In a statement, the National Heart Institute (IJN) said that Siti
Salmah died at 5.40am due to severe septicaemia.
"Her family members were with her throughout the night till her
demise this morning," the statement said.
"Throughout the 25 days of her stay in ICU, Siti Salmah showed
great courage and strength whilst undergoing treatment and
rehabilitation."
The statement said there was no evidence that Siti Salmah had
rejected her new heart and lungs after the transplant.
"However, she succumbed to septicaemia due to severe infection."
The 18-year-old got both her organs from the same donor – a
24-year-old woman from Alor Star who died after being hit by a
motorcycle on Nov 2.
Siti Salmah suffered from pulmonary hypertension and had been
registered as an organ recipient since 2005.
She had been receiving treatment from the Institute of
Respiratory Medicine in Kuala Lumpur.
