KUALA LUMPUR: Seeing the Aquaria KLCC on television made mechanical heart girl Tee Hui Yi, 14, long to visit it.
But her unstable heart condition caused the trip to be deferred many times.
Yesterday, though, Tee’s dream came true when the National Heart Institute arranged for her to visit the Aquaria KLCC.
Armed with a 9kg portable battery for her mechanical heart, the excited girl was accompanied by three IJN staff. They arrived about 9.40am and were greeted by Aquaria KLCC customer service assistant Ahmad Ikhwan.
Also present was Tee’s mother, Dina Bato Sambua.
The group then went on a guided tour lasting almost two hours. Tee clicked away busily on her camera as they entered the 90m underwater tunnel and were surrounded by all types of colourful fish and sharks.
Halfway through the tour, IJN nurse Sharifah Noraidah Syed Nong had to change the battery for Tee’s mechanical heart but even that did not dampen the spunky girl’s enthusiasm.
It’s been 10 months since Tee was fitted with the mechanical heart, which might last her two years.
In the meantime, she waits in hope for a suitable heart donor. She wants to return home to her family as soon as possible.
Transplant co-ordinator Noorsalina Othman said Tee had just recovered from fever and was still on antibiotics.
"But her condition is better now and that’s why we arranged the visit."
Buoyed by her visit to the Aquaria KLCC, Tee is hoping to be able to visit the KL Tower next.
