Erin awaits new liver transplant
Article date: 13 July 2007

Erin was doing well until becoming ill in February

A County Armagh girl is back on an organ transplant list after her body rejected her new liver.

Erin Nicks, who will be three in November, underwent an eleventh-hour liver transplant at a Birmingham hospital two years ago.

She is now being cared for at the same hospital while her family waits for a suitable organ to become available.

Doctors said if Erin survived for a year rejection would be highly unlikely but in February she became unwell.

Suitable
Erin and her family, who are from Whitecross, flew back to Birmingham last week and she was put back on the list to await a transplant.

She will now stay in hospital until a suitable liver can be found.

Erin's father Nick said: "We are in the same situation we were in two years ago where we're hoping somebody in their grief would be generous enough to donate their organs, either a child's or an adult's organs."

Erin was healthy when she was born but, after about six weeks, blood tests picked up a problem with her liver.

Shortly before her first transplant, Erin's condition was so serious that at one point she stopped breathing.
