More Malaysians pledge to donate their organs

Article date: 09 Feb 2009

KUALA LUMPUR: After years of appealing to Malaysians to donate organs, the effort is slowly paying off.

National Transplant Resource Centre (NTRC) procurement manager Datin Dr Lela Yasmin Mansor said in the first 29 days of this year 12 families had come forward to donate the organs of their deceased loved ones.

However, only the kidneys and tissues of three of them were harvested. The others were rejected because of the nature of their illnesses and the condition of their organs.

"There were many who died in road accidents this month and we had hoped to get their organs but unfortunately we did not," Dr Lela said.

She expressed the hope that families of accident victims would come forward and donate the organs of their deceased members as those who died in road accidents were usually young and healthy.
"We really hope to get more organ donors this year compared with the previous years," she told the New Straits Times.

Last year, 26 donors donated 13 kidneys, four livers, 13 heart valves, 20 corneas and four bones.

Up to the end of last year, a total of 122,301 Malaysians pledged their organs and they comprised 74,131 Chinese, 28,713 Indians, and 16,023 Malays. Most of those who pledged their organs were female.

Dr Lela said last year NTRC spent RM2 million to create awareness of organ donation.

"We placed advertisements on organ donation to create greater awareness of its importance and we want to target increasing this awareness among schoolchildren."

The centre is in the midst of providing information kits on organ donation to schoolchildren and adults.

In 2007, the authorities harvested three hearts, five livers, two lungs, eight heart valves, 16 corneas and five bones from 25 brain-dead patients.

In 2006, there were also 25 organ donors who donated 13 kidneys, a heart, six livers, a lung, 16 heart valves, 19 corneas, three skin implants and six bones. Between 1976 and last year, 206 people donated 435 organs and tissues.

Dr Lela said there was a dire need for organs such as heart, lungs, liver and kidneys.
