Kidneys and corneas from teenager

Article date: 08 Oct 2007

ALOR STAR: Doctors at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital here harvested a pair of kidneys and corneas from a 17-year-old boy diagnosed as brain dead on Saturday following a road accident.

The body of the student was wheeled into the operation theatre at 8.55am yesterday after consent was given by his family.

Hospital director Dr Che Pah Ahmad said harvesting organs was a routine procedure at the hospital.

“When families of dead and brain-dead patients give their consent, we will carry out the harvesting,” she said.

One kidney was sent to Selayang Hospital while the other went to Hospital Kuala Lumpur's paediatrics department last night.

The corneas were sent to hospitals in Kuala Lumpur.
